Triming the Cost of Thanksgiving

So this is my first year actually planning and purchasing food for thanksgiving. Dustin's mother is flying in and we're doing thanksgiving at our place. I've been gathering up my coupons and searching the sale ads for the best deals on all the thanksgiving items. I went to Wal-Mart a few days ago and got started on my shopping list. This week (until tomorrow 11/12) target had the best deals by far on turkey and stuffing. Walmart had ButterBall turkeys on sale for 1.58/lb and Stove Top stuffing for I believe 1.09. Target had butterball turkeys priced at $.97/lb and stove top stuffing for $.89. My 10.08 lb turkey at Walmart was priced at $15.93 and after PriceMatching i got it for $9.78!! I then had a coupon for $1.00 off any butterball turkey AND $3.00 off wyb a combo of a butterball tukey, heinz gravy, pillsbury crescent rolls or stove top stuffing. If i paid RETAIL w/o price matching or coupons for my turkey and (2) stovetop stuffings and (2) heinz gravies i would have spent around $20.00 BUT with Price matching and coupons i spent only $9.50!
heres an article on yahoo about some other ways to save some $ on the holidays!

A Big V for the WG!

I went into Walgreens yesterday ready with my list of things i was going to get on this weeks circular, crossing my fingers they had what i needed.
First the Keri Lotion on RR....none
Then the Skinny Cow...none
THEN the colgate toothpaste..none
and finially the crest+scope toothpaste...NONE!

At this point I've about had it with the Stillwater walgreens not having anything. I asked one of the managers if they had anything i wanted in stock and he informed me that they didnt get ANY of the colgate or crest or keri lotion in. So i left walgreens aggrivated and annoyed. How are we suspose to shop there when they dont even get the products in thats in the weekly circular? Its not even that some crazy coupon lady has come and cleared the shelf, its that they didnt get ANY!

So anyways, today i decided enough was enough and I called WG corporate customer service and informed them of my issue. No more than 3 hours later I got a call from Mike one of the managers at the SW WG following up with me on my corporate call. He was very friendly and understanding and appologized for the lack of inventory. He told me he DID get some of the items in today and was holding them in the back for me. He said sometimes when sales are so popular they dont always get in the products since the warehouse is streatched thin, and what they do get in, usually goes as soon as they put in on the shelf. He did say they get shipments on tuesday and wednesdays so after that is the best time to find things, and if your looking for something specific, call and ask them to hold it for you. (as long as its not a CRAZY amount)

While I had him on the phone I wanted to ask some questions about their coupon policy just to verify.

  • if you have a single item that you use (1) Manufacture Coupon and (1) Walgreens coupon it only counts as (1) coupon

  • if you have a coupon that is a BOGO coupon that counts a (2) coupons

  • if you have a coupon that states $ off more than 1 item, however many items you need for the coupon, thats how many coupons its counted as.....example "$2/3 items" counts as (3) coupons.

  • and a Register Reward counts as a manufacture coupon against your transaction

So always have the same number or more items than coupons. i like to grab the $.15 laffy taffy. it seems to be the cheapest thing in the store.

So i want to say thanks to Mike from Walgreens in Stillwater for following up with me and just say dont be afraid to voice your concerns to store because it can pay off!

Wal-Mart Price Matching

This is my explaination of what I'VE UNDERSTOOD price matching to be. This is what concusion I've come to based on reading blogs, shopping at Wal-Mart and talking with their employees. This is in no way meant to be the ONLY answer, just how ive interpreted everything.

According to Wal-Marts price matching policy- they'll match any local competitors price right at the register and you do not need to have the ad in order to get the price. But IT IS up to that stores manager to deem what "local" is. So some stores may vary on who they'll PM.
So it may be just stores in Stillwater, or the surrounding areas. I've been told by a CSM at the Wal-Mart on Perkins that they'll price match up to a 50 mile radius, so for us Stillwater people, that includes the Target in Edmond, the CVS in Edmond and the Homelands in Perry and Guthrie. Now this could vary by store/how educated or nice your cashier is so don't quote me on this.

What I like to do is gather up all the ads for the week (grocery store ad come out on wednesday and target, cvs, walgreens on sunday) Then circle or make a list of what deals I want and what coupons i have for them...heres an example of what i did this week....

Price Match

Target Ad

· Nicole by OPI nail polish $6.50
Use $1.00/1 coupon
= $5.50

Homeland
· Lawrys Marinade 2/$3
Use $1.00 off MC
= .50 each
· Cascadian Farms Granola Bars 2/$5
Use $.75 off (1) MC
= $ 1.75 each
· International Delight Coffee Creamer $1.99
Use $.55 off MC
= $1.44
· Pillsbury French Bread Loaf, Breadsticks or Pizza $2.89
Use $.40 off 1 MC
= $2.49 each
· Hefty Trash Bags $5.59
· Healthy Choice Steamers 2/$5
· Frito Lay Chips/Pretzels 3/$6
· SnackWells Bars $2.29
Use $.75 off 1 MC
= $1.54
· Daisy Sour Cream $2.79
· Hormel Pepperoni $2.99
Use .55 off (2) MC
= $5.43/2 or $2.72 each

CVS
· Filippo Berio Olive Oil $3.99
Use $1.00 off MC
= $2.99

Food Pyramid

· Tide 24-32 oz liquid detergent $5.99
Use $1.00 off any Tide MC
=$4.99
· Healthy Choice Entrees $1.99
· Toufayan Pita Bread $1.69
· Sabra Hummus $3.69
· Laughing Cow Baby Bell Cheese $3.49

This obviously isn't everything that was in their ads, only the ones I found i wanted/had coupons for.

Whenever I'm shopping I make sure to keep everything I'm price matching separate in my cart so its easier when i get up to check out.

and now for the fun part....how to PM at the register.

Once I get to the register, I put everything up first that DO need price matching then put up the items that DO NOT (i'm sure you could reverse this order as long as you keep them separate) I find puting the PM items first is better for me because the cashier hasn't gotten too overwhelmed yet and I can pay attention to what their scanning better.
Since WM DOES NOT require you to have the ad with you to PM all i do is tell the cashier which items I'm PM and when they scan the item i say what the PM is. Like for example today when i bought the Lawrys Marinade, WM reg. price is $2.00 and homeland had them on sale 2/$3. I let the cashier know they were 2/$3 or $1.50 and she manually override the price. No questions asked. I think if you say some bogus price they'll probably get suspicious but I havent any issues with it yet. and YES YOU CAN PM AND USE A COUPON!! like for the Lawrys items I purchased 4, PM to $1.50 each and had 4 $1.00 off coupons. So PM and coupons saved me $6.00 on the marinades.

Price matching is great for many reasons, you dont have to drive from store to store to get the best prices and IF a PM is less than a coupon WM will give you the overage. For example last week dollar general had Zyrtec 5ct on sale for $4.50 and i had a $5.00 coupon, i PM at WM, used the coupon and got the Zyrtec for FREE + $.50 overage!
WM will also PM produce from other stores which is great b/c usually smaller stores have cheaper produce. You just have to make sure you are PM item-item and lb-lb.

And there are A LOT of times when i'll make my PM list and get to WM and realize WM prices are still lower than the PM from another store.

It might seem like a lot of work but I work full time and find ways to do it, just comit to youself that AS SOON as you get the ads, you'll circle or write down the items that interst you and that way you'll have them and can prepare your shopping trip.

If you still feel hesitant about it, take the ads in with you and talk to a CSM or SM and see what their policy is and ALWAYS have the WM coupon & PM policy with you, its gotten me some great deals!

Wal Mart Lunch Run & Cascade trial packs!

So i ran to Wal-Mart at lunch today to Price match and pick up a few things.

Heres what I Price Matched-

Filippo Berio Olive Oil Walmart Priced $4.84
CVS Sale Price $3.99
Used $1.00 off MC from Filippo Berio Website
=$2.99 OOP

Lawrys Marinade Walmart Priced $2.00
Homeland Perry Sale 2/$3
Used (4) $1.00 off MC
=$2.00/4 or $.50 each!

and I FINALLY found the Cascade Action Pack Trial Size! the $.97 ones that are free +overage with the $1.00 off coupon. They were in the aisle where the toliet paper is on the very end in an endcap dispay, NOT by the actual cascade. I would have gotten more but the coupon said "Limit 4 per shopping trip" (I'll go back ;) )

Cascade Trial Packs $.97
Used (4) $1.00 off coupons
= FREE + $.12 overage!

So my Subtotal prior to coupons and price matching (less tax) was- $16.72
Price Matching Saved me- $2.85
Coupon total savings was- $9.00

Total OOP (before tax) was $4.87 YAY!
thats a 71% savings! and i had NO issues at the Cash Register! Thats a reason to celebrate in itself!

whoo hoo! Happy Savings everyone!

Wal Mart Shopping Trip and My 2nd attempt at the Target Catalinas!

So went to wal-mart last night to do some grocery shopping and try and use my Target Revlon beauty tool catalinas i had an issue with last time. I picked up (3) nail clippers priced at $1.42 each (they were out of the $1 clearance ones i tried to buy last week)
heres what my shopping trip consisted of....

Price Matched items-
(4) Coca-Cola Brand Products $1.00 (priced match to consumers ad)
-MC $2.00 off any (2) Coca-Cola Products when you buy (2) Nabisco Products (as I looked at my receipt the cashier failed to take off this coupon which is annoying since that would have made for 2 free liter cokes.)
(2) Diggiornio Pizzas 2/$10 (price matched to consumers ad)

(4) WhoNu Cookies $2.78
(1) $1.00 off coupons
(2) B1G1 free coupons
=$3.56/4 or .89 each

(3) Dole Fruit Bites $2.98 each
(3) MC $ 1.00 off 1
= $5.94/3 or $1.98 each

1 Wal-Mar Brand Torilla Chips $1.48

Kikkomann Soy Sauce $1.72
MC $1.00 off 1
= $.72

Instant Oatmeal $1.42

(6) Old El Paso Taco Seasonings $.78
(2) MC $.60 off 3
=$3.48/6 or .58 each

(2) Nabisco Weatthins $2.50 each
MC $1.00 off 2
= $4.00/2 or $2.00 each

(3) Revlon Nail Clippers $1.42
(1) Target Catalina $2.00 off any 1 revlon tool
(1) Target Catalina $5.00 off any 2 revlon tools
= FREE + $2.74 Credit! (I'll explain how i got them to FINALLY accept these)

(3) Weber Grill Seasonings $2.58
(3) MC $1.00 off any 1
= $4.74/3 or $1.58 each

My subtotal was $62.56 and i paid $40.36 OOP so a total savings of $22.20. I would have saved ANOTHER $2.00 if i noticed my coke+nabisco coupon hadn't scanned.

But in regards to the nail clippers, i stood firm with the cashier and the Customer Service Manager (different one from before) and showed them Wal-Marts official coupon policy where it describes Catalinas. He was hesitiant at first and kept saying it wasn't the same but finally after reading it and looking at the coupon he said i was right, and that he now knows what a catalina is. (So glad your CSM knows your policies-insert sarcasm)

Always Check your Reciept! -Walgreens

So after the coupon swap last night at the library my friend tiffany and I went over to walgreens, we were in search of toothpaste and trident gum.
Unfortunatly they were out of the toothpaste that was on sale so we picked up a few other things. this is how my transaction(s) played out.

Trans #1
(2) Scrunci Hair ties Sale 2/$3
+#RR for next purchase
=$3 + $3 RR

Trans #2
(4) 3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp Bars Sale $.49
(9) Trident vitality Gum packs Sale $.79
(2) Skinny Cow Cluster Snacks Sale 2/$1.79
(1) Laffy Taffy $.15
=$11.18 (w/tax) before coupons
Coupons-
(2) $.50 off (2) 3 Musketeers bars
(3) $.200 off (3) Trident packs
(1) B1G1Free Skinny Cow snacks
$3.00 RR from trans #1

Well when my transaction was first rang up, my total was $5.32 which seemed high to me and the cashier said he scanned all of my coupons so i went with it. But when i went outside and examined my reciept, he fail to scan (2) of my $2.00 off coupons and (1) .50 off coupons. So i went back inside, they voided my 2nd transaction and re-rang everything up and my total OOP was $.98! Much better!

Moral of the story-check your reciept before you leave! its easier to fix if they've still got easy access to your coupons and remeber what you've bought.
I'm going to try going back today at lunch to see if they've re-stocked the sale toothpaste and get more 3 musketeer bars! I'm sure the walgreens people will be happy to see me :)

Wal-Mart Shopping Annoyance

So I'm annoyed with Wal-mart at the moment because I went in today after work wanting to pick up some good deals and left not so happy. Maybe I'm wrong on my thinking but this is what happened.

I printed off (2) of the $5.00 Bengay product coupons found on coupons.com today and was excited because the blogs had been saying they've seen bengay at wal-mart for $4.27. When i went to wally-world (6th ave location) Bengay was $4.98...laaaame. Not really good enough for me to use the coupon since I dont even use Bengay anyways. i really wanted the overage.
Then I went over to cosmetics. I had received 2 Catalinas from Target on Sunday 1 for $2.00 off ANY revlon tool and one for $5.00 off ANY 2 revlon tools. Since the coupon did say "Manufacture coupon and had a valid expiration date and remit address I figured it'd be valid. The coupon did say "Redeemable at Target" but it still stated MANUFACTURE COUPON on it, therefor making it good anywhere. I picked up (3) revlon nail clippers i found on clearance for $1, making my overage $4.00!
I also got some eggs, milk, cereal and fruit and those new "WhoNU" cookies. I had the B1G1F coupon from coupons.com and the $1.00 off coupon found in the paper a few weeks back. i had coupons too for the eggs for $1.00 off 1 carton of eggs (any size/price) w/ purchase of (2) Kellogg cereals. Then I had (2) $1.00 off coupons for the cereal and a $.75 off milk coupons I stumbled across online.
So i get up the to the register with all my items, first the lady was confused by the egg coupon, but it rang through, and then informed me initially i couldn't use the B1G1F WHONU coupon w/ the $1.00 off but I told her i could since it was (2) items and i had (2) coupons. Then came the fun part the nail clippers, the thing i was depending on to get my total way down....
She rang up the $2.00 off (1) and $5.00 off (2) and they both rang fine but then she started looking at them and said she needed to verify they were ok b/c
1. they had a target logo on them
and
2. they were more than the items cost.
I expained to her everything i said in this blog but she was still weary. She called over a customer service associate who proceeded to tell me the only type of manufacture coupons they'll accept are PRICE MATCHES and they can't use coupons for more than the product value! FALSE!! I explained to him (calmly) that this coupon did come from target but it did have all the requirement of a standard coupon and followed their coupon policy about competitor coupons and overage can be used towards the rest of the purchase. I asked if he'd like to see it in the Wal-Mart coupon policy (which i had in my binder) and he rudely told me he was aware of their policy and it wouldn't be necessary. I would have pressed the situation more but the people behind me in line looked annoyed. So i left w/o my $4.00 overage credit which would have been a big help seeing as I spent $11.88. that would have been like taking another 33% off!

In regards to my situation Wal-Marts coupon policy states-
  • "If the coupon value exceeds the price of the item, the excess may be given to the customer as cash or applied towards the basket purchase"
  • "Catalinas-Printed out at our COMPETITORS register for dollar/cents off a specific item. must have manufacture coupon with specific item requirements printed on them. must have a valid remit address for the manufacture. Must have valid expiration date. Must have scannable barcode. are accepted in black and white, may not be duplicated"
I think i'm going to go back tomorrow and talk with customer service about it just so i can be clear, and maybe help educate the employees there on what their policy states.

Target Couponing 7/17

My friend Tiffany and I made a trip down to Edmond Sunday to hit up some deals at Target! We both made out pretty good. I thought I was going to fair better, but I was unaware that Target does not do overages. But heres how my transaction broke down.

Trans #1 Starbucks
There was a $1.50 off Starbucks Iced Via in Sundays Coupons so we took that coupon to the Starbucks in Target to get our Via+ a free tall drink. I dont know if Target Starbucks are different, but the email and the coupon I had from Starbucks said "Buy a Starbucks Iced Via get ANY tall drink for Free" But the barista at Starbucks informed us that no it was a free tall VIA. oh well free coffee is free coffee.

Starbucks Iced Caramel Via $5.95
MC $1.50 found in 7/17 SS
=$4.45 +tax

Walmart (6th ave) carries Via Iced Coffee's (not the carmel flavor though) and they gave them on Rollback for $6.78 reg. $7.78, So i think its better to buy them from a Starbucks or Food Pyramid in town.

Trans #2

Wholly Guacamole $5.09
$1.00 off Target Mobile Coupon
$1.00 off MC
= $3.09 OOP

Mortons Seasoning Salt $.97
$.60 off MC
= $.37

(2) Dove Men Body+Face Wash $5.14
(2) $1.00 off Target Coupons
(1) B1G1 Free Coupon
=FREE

(2) Dove Mens Body Scrubber $3.89
(1) B1G1 Free Coupon
= $7.78/2
-these two transaction confuses me on my receipt. It looks like they took the B1G1F coupons off BOTH of the Body and Face wash, not one face/body wash and one scrubber. Not that I'm complaining b/c the face wash was more $. But i just thought it was odd.

Revlon Nail File $1.27
Walgreens MC catalina $2.00 off any revlon tool
= FREE
i did think i was going to get the overage on this transaction, but come to find out target doesn't do that. darn....

Sally Hansen Nail Strips $8.57
(1) MC $1.00 off found in Aug. ALL YOU mag.
(1) $1.00 off Target coupon
= $6.57

(4) Natural Instincts Hair Color Clearance Priced $3.47
(2) $5.00 off 2 Clairol Haircolor coupons found in 7/17 SS
= $3.88/4 or .$97 a box!

Kleenex 3 Pack (found in trial section) $.99
$.50 off MC
=$.49

(2) BIC Ballpoint Pens Sale $.60
$1.00 off 2 Printable MC coupon
= $.20 for 2 packets of pen

Post It notes Sale $1.00
$1.00 off coupon found in the Arctic Zone lunchbox i purchased at Wal-Mart
= FREE

(2) Scotch Magic Tape Sale $.60
(2) $.50 off Target Coupons
(2) $1.00 off MC coupons
= 2/FREE
-once again i thought i would have overage on this. But no, just free tape which isn't bad. i should have just saved my MC and used them another time.

(2)Dove Mens Deodorant Sale $3.49
(2) MC $2.00 off
(1) Target coupon $2.00 off 2
= $.98/2 or $.49 each!

Total = $23.36 by my calculation HOWEVER my target receipt says my Subtotal was only $17.80 which is something else that confuses me. But I'll pay less thats fine with me!

GRAND TOTAL (according to targets receipt)
$22.25+tax
Saved $45.47 which is about a 67% savings!

I dont know about anyone else but Targets receipts confuses me. It seems like certain coupons wont scan, or wont reflect on the receipt and things are all out of order. I had to stare at it and my written list for a while to try and decipher it. But regardless I'd say it was a pretty successful shopping trip!

I have a nail polish obsession. I've got every color under the sun and am a sucker for anything new in the world of polish. Recently nail polish "strips" have become popular, allowing long wear without waiting for them to dry. Theres an awesome deal right now through SaveMore.com to get nail polish strips FREE. Savemore is like a groupon site and they have the $12 regular priced strips 50% off PLUS new Customers get a $10 credit on their first transaction making this FREE!
MAKE SURE you register as a new customer BEFORE purchasing so it'll discount them. I had to enter my CC info in order for it process but nothing was charged. Get it before they're gone!

Pupalup

Group discount sites are everywhere. Even those that live under a rock have probably heard of them. From Groupon to Living Social and Seize the Deal there are many options to satisfy the deal seeker in us. A few months ago i was driving my usual route on country club to work and saw a sign for a new deal site specifically for Stillwater! Pupalup.com
While Groupon and those others are great, more of the time the deals are for OKC or Tulsa and its not always the most convenient for those in Stillwater. Pupalup is great because it offers deals for Stillwater and the surrounding areas of Payne county. There is also an option for Bartlesville,OK to receive deals.
There have been deals for various resturants, wedding invitations and massages.
I just got an email today for a great deal for Koyoto Japanese Resturant $10 for $20 worth of food! You can use it on sushi or hibachi,
Check it out here

The Beginning

I guess I'll start out with a little background about me. I moved to Oklahoma about a year ago from Phoenix to join my (then) boyfriend as he completed his Masters at Oklahoma State. Living in a big city and at home- its easy to become spoiled with connivence and easy spending. Prior to moving to Oklahoma i worked 2 jobs and saved money in anticipation of being on my own and paying my own way.
I got a job working full time at a local car dealership and began trying to survive in the "real world"
I think at first, i was still under the delusion that i could come and go and spend how i'd liked. But soon i realized I had to pump the brakes and start being a little smarter with my money.
I've never been the type to really "save" as in not go out and spend money so i knew cutting off wasn't going to work for me. My (now) fiance Dustin and are are the types that like to go out and do things and i don't want to have to say no to something because i don't want to spend money. So i've decided the best way to do/buy what we want and save money is with coupons! I've become hooked on finding coupons for anything-food,beauty supplies, dog stuff, clothes, shoes anything. if i want to buy it i need to have a coupon!
I don't believe in depriving yourself and with coupons you don't have to. With this blog i hope to spotlight some great deals around Stillwater and the Oklahoma area.
So here we go!
